The Human Footprint

The concept of "The Human Footprint" came to me this year during a visit to the zoo with my children. It’s always a little rushed, and at times - stressful. Since my new approach to getting ‘Back to the Basics,’ I feel like I am beginning to slow down and become more observant of my surroundings.

This is a quotation I saw in the Rainforest Building, I have never noticed it before although it is huge and welcomes you as you immediately step into the building.

I stopped in my tracks and thought about my children as I read this quotation over and over. I rush through life to get as much done in a day as I possibly can. I welcome conveniences with little or no awareness to how my actions are affecting the perception of my children and my human footprint on the environment. I want to teach my children to slow down and love the simple things in life. However, I must begin with teaching our children about nature to truly understand their impact on the environment.

It is human instinct to take care of what we love. It is difficult to reach outside of this and take care of other things, for example, the environment when we don’t experience it first hand. This is our most daunting challenge as a society today, to teach our children about how to respect nature by being actively involved in nature. I think the simplest of gestures will lead to a life long love of the environment as well as the health of the human body.

The Carbon Footprint

A measure of the amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activities, in units of carbon dioxide. Includes direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels (through transportation and energy consumption) and indirect CO2 emissions from the manufacture and breakdown of a whole spectrum of producers.

A carbon footprint can help you conceptualize your contribution to global warming.

We all need to reach out of the knowledge that we are part of something far bigger than we are, to honour life in and around us, and to walk gently on our planet.

Watch this trailer of the documentary 11th Hour. It really helped change my perspective that there is hope and individual choices will make a difference to the overall environment.

It is easy to be ‘Green,’ just consume less and cut back on synthetic chemicals that sustain modern life – that pollute the only things we need: clean air, water, soil, food and bodies.
