2) Make lists!

Make lists according to the # of minutes each task takes. I try to beat my own time – makes the task a little more fun if it’s a challenge! Here is mine:

Less than 5 minutes: Cleaning underneath fridge & stove, dusting surfaces (firplace, tables, bookshelves, buffet/hutch, furniture), sweeping, emptying/reloading dishwasher, cleaning out microwave, wipe down kitchen cupboards, make beds, changing bathroom hand towels.

15 minutes: Vacuuming carpets, cleaning bathrooms, cleaning out fridge/stove, mopping hard floors, folding & putting away clothes, washing interior windows & mirrors, cleaning mats, cleaning out / organizing 1 closet, organize pantry, cleaning light fixtures.

30 minutes: Wiping down blinds, changing and washing bed linens, Going through seasonal clothing and storing, Outdoor duties (tidying front yard, backyard – thanks to Nanook, our new puppy – and gardening).

I usually don’t have enough time to do it all at once, but if I have 15 minutes before picking my son up from preschool I will pick a chore that needs to be done and see if I can get it done in time! You can add which ever chores to this list into the appropriate time slots. Happy quick cleaning!

“The work you do today will make tomorrow’s work that much easier.”

3) Have a “Honeydew” Day

This is my favorite!! Last weekend I asked my husband if he wanted to have a “honeydew” day – sounds romantic right? His eyes lit up and agreed pretty quickly – so I pulled out my list of chores! “Honey can you do this,” “honey will you that.” I’ve learned that my husband doesn’t mind helping me when I give him specific chores, outlined in great detail! Here are a few examples for this special day: Cleaning off the front/back patio, hanging pictures, changing filters, replacing lightbulbs, washing exterior windows, small fix-ups, helping move furniture, washing vehicles, picking up as we go, switching laundry, emptying recyclables, grocery run. It saves so much time and we have fun doing these chores together.

I also love including the kids on a daily basis to help make their own beds, wash dishes, switch laundry, vacuum, dust, wash windows/mirrors with fingerprints and tidy up after themselves. Nothing too daunting but enough responsibility for them to feel important and see how good it feels to help me.

4) Declutter / Organize

The trick I have learned to conquering clutter is to not let it sit and to organize daily/weekly. If something is broken and cannot be fixed I either recycle it or throw it out immediately to prevent clutter. I’ve come to the realization that organization is a work in progress and is an ongoing task. This acceptance has made growing piles of paperwork, toys and general articles more bearable to tackle!

5) One room at a time.

Spring Cleaning can feel overwhelming but if you stick to one room at a time, a tip my Mother has always told me, instead of doing a little here and there you will see progress and will be motivated to complete another room. The feeling of accomplishment will permeate throughout your home as well as you!

6) Get underneath and behind Big Furniture.

Under beds, dressers, couches, tables, the fridge & stove, corners, desks.

7) Cleaning & Dusting

Please visit my website for helpful ideas and natural cleaning tips!

8) Make your bed everyday.

It only takes a couple of minutes as soon as you roll out of bed and is such a nice treat when you walk back into the room during the day or crawl into it at night. Try it for a few weeks to make a habit of it!

9) Hang a clothesline in the back yard!

Not only is this environmentally friendly it is also a great way to get some fresh air and have your clothes smelling naturally delicious!

10) Treat yourself!

Open the windows & get excited for spring.

Reward yourself with treats, taking breaks to play a game with the kids.

Or if you are overwhelmed with work, the kids or schedules take time out for yourself and clean for 20 minutes. You may need to adjust your mindset a little but you will feel rejuvenated! Relish for a couple of minutes in the order and freshness you have created in your home!

Good luck with your Spring Cleaning and if you are trying to switch to cleaning with non-toxic chemicals please read the information offered on my website, try Modern Betty products or ask any questions you have!

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
